When you hear the words mens tweed jacket the very first thought that runs through your head is most likely a picture of the university professor standing in front of the class giving a lecture. While there are many different varieties and colors of tweed, the Harris Tweed is perhaps the most famous of all. Known as Clò Mór in Gaelic this luxurious cloth was hand woven on the Scottish Outer Hebrides islands for centuries and only in the last century has it been made for export.

Today mens tweed jackets are still made with Harris Tweed that is woven by hand even thought the spinning and dyeing are done by machine. Every mens tweed jacket made with Harris Tweed bears a label with the Harris Tweed Orb and states that it is hand woven in the Outer Hebrides, if you do not see this label on the jacket it is not genuine Harris Tweed.

Wearing Your Mens Tweed Jacket

While there are many different colors and patterns of mens tweed jackets from Scottish tweeds to Irish tweeds and many more  this wonderful fabric is worn by many to add an air of fine taste to their personality.  However, to pull off the classic look you have to know how to wear tweed just right or you will end up looking like a country bumpkin who is trying to rise above his station in life.  The First thing that you need to know is that there is a proper time of year to wear tweed and that is in the fall and winter.

While you can wear a mens tweed jacket any time of year the appropriate time is when it is cold outside not when it is warm. Of course if it gets to cold you might be better off to wear a mens bomber jacket and stay warm. The bomber jacket is made to withstand the coldest possible temperatures where as the tweed will only keep you warm down to around freezing or so.

Too Much Tweed?

Is there such a thing as too much tweed? According to some fashion gurus there can be, just because you went out and bought yourself a tweed suit does not mean that you should wear it as a suit.  In fact the general consensus of opinion is that too much tweed can be quite overwhelming and you are better off only wearing one item of tweed at a time. If you really want to wear your mens tweed jacket, you should pair it up with a nice solid colored pair of trousers or for a very casual look a nice pair of blue jeans.

If you are wearing the pants then you need to wear a complementing shirt with perhaps a light colored sports jacket. A mens tweed jacket, when it is worn with the right complementing clothes can help you to look very sophisticated and dapper. While tweed has been around for a very long time, it is still very fashionable no matter how young or old you are and you do not have to be a member of the upper crust to enjoy wearing it.
