During the Second World War Air Corps pilot were issued leather jackets that were lined with wool to keep them warm at the altitudes they were required to fly at for combat missions. After the war was over these became a very popular mens leather jacket for just about anyone to wear. In particular the freshly discharged GIs who found chose to ride one of the hundreds or left over Harley Davidson motorcycles found that this style of mens leather jackets was ideal for staying warm and safe.

For many years the mens leather jacket has been associated with the macho look and for the most part cowhide has been the leather of choice in most parts of the world. However, there are areas of the world where other leathers are used such as in areas of South America where the average mens leather jacket is likely to be made from pigskin and in some areas of Africa you may find ostrich hide being used.

Not Just for Flyboys

While the original mens leather bomber jacket was created for World War 2 bomber pilots to help them stay warm in their under heated bomber for hours as they bombed enemy bases, they are now a favorite amongst both men and women for their classic good looks. These jacket s were made from shearling, which is basically the hide of a sheep that the wool is still attached to and has been turned inside out and tanned. While somewhat heavy, these mens leather jackets are incredibly warm, which is just what the pilots of the era needed.

The Wild One

The mens leather jacket really came into its own with the release of two movies starring Marlon Brando, The Wild One and Rebel without a cause. Both of these movies featured Brando as Johnny Strabler, the epitome of the macho male with his leather jacket and Harley Davidson motorcycle out to have a good time and cause as much trouble as he could. The modern mens leather biker jacket is and adaptation of this same style and has earned a place in history.

From the ones worn by the Hells Angels to the one worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator movies it is now very fashionable to wear a leather biker jacket and no longer just something that only outlaw bikers wear.

Top Fashion

Even though the mens leather jacket has long been more about function than fashion, in recent years the mens designer leather jacket has become very popular and can be found in variety of colors, styles and cuts from waist length to trench coat. Many of today's stars can be seen sporting the latest in mens leather jackets when the weather starts to cool off. There are now leather jackets with zippers and buttons, some are reversible with different colors on each side while other are cut to resemble a sports jacket.

There is something special far beyond the machismo that goes with wearing mens leather jackets. They are more than just a practical jacket as each individual jacket has its own personality and the smell of leather adds such a unique character to both the jacket and the person who is wearing it.
