Mens Bomber Jacket - Staying Warm has Never Looked so Cool

It proved to be dangerously cold for the flight crews of the bombers over Europe during the Second World War. The aircraft were capable of flying higher and faster than ever before, but with open gunner's windows and the sudden temperature drops when the bomb doors were opened, frostbite was not unheard of. What these flight crews needed was clothing that was designed to keep them warm no matter how cold the temperature was, it did not take long for the military to come up the mens bomber jacket.

These new mens bomber jackets were made from goat skins that still had the wool attached. The skins were turned inside out so that the wool became a nice warm liner and collar were made tall enough to help keep the neck and ears warm as the freezing cold air rushed through the bomber on the long flights to and from their targets in France and Germany. Today while not all mens bomber jackets are made from leather they are still considered very cool to wear and very warm.

History in Use

While the war may have ended 63 years ago, the mens bomber jacket is still very much in use albeit with a few modifications over the years. In the US the Air Force abandoned this style of mens leather jacket almost as soon as the jet bomber came online. The new bombers were pressurized and heated so that there was no real need for the super warmth of the mens leather bomber jacket, instead they switched to a new nylon bomber jacket that was lighter in weight and much more flexible to wear for the pilot.

However, while the US Air Force may have replaced them the US Navy still issues them to their pilots as more of a tradition than out of need as today's jet air craft are far from cold on the inside. This has not stopped the general public from thoroughly enjoying the benefits of the design. In fact there are more people wearing some form of mens bomber jacket than at the height of World War Two.

From Bombs to Bikes

Once the war was over, many of the pilots and aircrew found themselves trying to readjust to life in peacetime and the boring drudge of a life without the enemy shooting them. For many this proved to be too much and they started seeking ways to get the adrenaline rush that they had become accustomed to living with on a daily basis. This led many of them to pick up a surplus motorcycle from the army and take off every chance they could to find some form of excitement.

When the weather turned cold they found that their old mens bomber jacket was the most practical jacket to wear, after all if the jacket had kept them warm over the cities of Germany what could be better for riding their Harley when it got cold. This is the forerunner of the leather biker that we are all familiar with today and is still one of the warmest jackets to be had no matter where you live.
